Będzin Ghetto Uprising

On this day, the Nazis began liquidating the Będzin Ghetto and faced armed resistance.

The Będzin Ghetto underground resistance became active when the Nazis invaded the ghetto. The resistance began by circulating illegal papers and contacting the Warsaw Ghetto Underground. Frumka Płotnicka organized Będzin’s Jewish Combat Organization with the help of Józef and Bolesław Kożuch and Cwi (Tzvi) Brandes. Relocating from Warsaw to the Będzin Ghetto, Frumka brought the stories of the resistance, inspiring the Będzin Ghetto to create their own and obtain weapons from the underground in Warsaw.

During the last deportation of the Ghetto, the underground resistance attacked the Nazis.. Most of the Jewish fighters were killed, including Frumka Płotnicka. The resistance fought for three days, but the Nazis won and liquidated the ghetto, deporting the survivors to Auschwitz.
