Romanian Jews Forced to Wear Yellow Stars

On this day, Romanian Jews were forced to wear yellow stars. During the Nazi takeover of Europe, the German government followed the antisemitic practice of forcing the Jews to wear identifying badges to isolate and dehumanize the Jews of Europe. The reason for the distinctive garments was to serve as a barrier between the Jewish and non-Jewish people. The forced garment embellishment enabled the Nazis and their followers to have ease when separating the Jewish people from society and ghettoization, leading to the deportation and murder of six million Jews.On November 23, 1940, Romania officially joined the Axis powers under the dictatorial regime of Mareșal Ion Antonescu. In August of 1941, Romania passed a legislature forcing the Jews to wear the six-pointed Star of David. If a Nazi service member caught a Jewish person not wearing the distinctive badge, the Jew was fined, imprisoned, or shot.
